CHAPTER 17

Beatrice had talked about Paul without a hint of sorrow. She’d also made no mention of the fact that he was missing, presumed dead. Skye was at a loss as to how to steer the conversation towards him, but Bob, ever quick on the uptake, chimed in.

“Who’d have thought? How did you two meet?” he asked, cocking his head with feigned curiosity. “Surely he owns an apartment in some fancy complex in Woolloomooloo? You know, with a rooftop pool and neighbours who only communicate via lawyers?”

The implied insult had gone straight over Beatrice’s head because she simply shook her head.

The waiter returned with their drinks, setting them down. Beatrice’s green concoction looked like it belonged more in a science lab than a café, its vibrant green hue swirling with flecks of ginger and lemon. She took a delicate sip, her bright pink fingernails barely grazing the glass.

Glancing at her smartwatch, Beatrice tapped the screen a few times and jotted something down. When she finished, she flashed a smile and held up her wrist, the device catching the light.

“This smartwatch is absolutely brilliant,” she said, her tone almost reverent. “It’s perfect for leading a healthy lifestyle—it tracks your exercise, your diet, and even warns you when you haven’t done the right thing. Everyone should have one. It’s like a personal trainer and nutritionist all in one.”

She eyed Skye’s drink. “You should think about getting one. It’d do wonders for your… balance.” She brushed an imaginary strand of hair from her face. “Anyway, in my line of work, I move in all sorts of circles.”

Skye noted the way she lingered on the word “all.” Her tone hinted at something far beyond the usual social cliques. Her circles undoubtedly came with exclusive addresses, refined indulgences, and bank accounts deep enough to make the world spin differently.

“Paul and I met a while ago,” Beatrice continued. “He told me right away that he’d found his one and only.”

Skye’s gaze sharpened on the slight tightening of Beatrice’s features—yet her eyes stayed dry, untouched by even a hint of tears.

A skilled actress, or she doesn’t care Paul is dead.

“He’s introduced me to many of his colleagues and others in the industry,” Beatrice added.

“Like who?” Bob piped up.

“Any women?” Josh asked, leaning forward.

Skye suppressed a groan. Josh was obviously angling to find out about Julia, but the last thing she wanted was for him to derail the conversation. Right now, it was Beatrice’s relationship with Paul that mattered most, and they might be about to lose that thread.

“Oh yes,” Beatrice said. “They are sharks, though.”

Her brow furrowed before she quickly smoothed it out by rubbing her fingers over it.

“Paul was different. A gentleman through and through. He wasn’t going to fall for any cheap, seductive trick. He was above all that. His clients included everyone—from well-known actors to business people and even influencers like myself.”

Skye noted Beatrice had slipped up and said was.

“Do you have investments with him?” Skye asked. She hadn’t thought to check Beatrice’s name against Paul’s investors.
